Métimer Garde le cap, et le bon ! Le bilan de Métimer, l'association des professionnels de la mer de Saint-Martin, est plus que satisfaisant, grâce à la volonté et au dynamisme de ses membres actifs. Dans cette 11ème édition de Turquoise, les lecteurs vont découvrir les photos de la très populaire Fête de la Mer, organisée chaque année par Métimer à Grand Case, et qui a séduit 6000 visiteurs en 2016 ! La sensibilisation des jeunes au milieu marin est importante pour l'association, qui à l'occasion du Discovery Day embarque tous les ans une centaine de scolaires à bord de voiliers prêtés par les membres et les emmène à Tintamare, en collaboration avec la Réserve naturelle, le club Wind Adventures et la SNSM. Également, pour permettre à tous les jeunes de l'île de s'ouvrir à l'univers des professions marines, Métimer met en place avec ses partenaires le Forum des métiers de la mer, qui leur permet de rencontrer les professionnels du secteur et peut-être leur métier de demain. metimer@wanadoo.fr www.metimer.fr Staying the course ! Métimer saisit cette occasion pour aller à la rencontre des différents candidats et leur exposer un plan de développement pour le nautisme, ainsi que la création d’une commission pour la promotion et la protection des métiers de la mer. Nous sommes nombreux à Saint-Martin - la population en tête - à mettre un point d'honneur à recevoir au mieux les visiteurs et à les encourager à découvrir notre belle île. Les professionnels du nautisme sont à leur disposition, que ce soit pour une croisière à la voile, une randonnée en mer vers l'un des proches îlots déserts, une plongée sur l'un de nos magnifiques sites sous-marins ou une initiation à l'un des nombreux sports nautiques proposés sur les plages. Cinq îles pour une destination unique / Five islands for a unique destination Saint-Barth Saint-Barth, «L’art d’être une île», a choisi de préserver ses beautés pour ceux qui ont le privilège de pouvoir se les offrir. Saint Barth, the “Art of being an island” has chosen to reserve its beauty for those who can afford to appreciate them. Saba Saba, la Reine Vierge. Point de sable blanc ni de casinos. Mais une atmosphère sereine, un volcan, des sentiers de randonnée et des sites de plongée connus dans le monde entier. Saba, the «Unspoiled Queen». No white sandy beaches, nor casinos. But it has a serene atmosphere, a volcano, hiking trails and world famous dive sites. Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Que voir et que faire What to see and what to do Les amateurs de sports nautiques n’auront que l’embarras du choix (voir pages suivantes) et une visite de la Réserve naturelle, à terre ou en mer s’impose (voir pages 140 à 157). En dehors de ses plages, Saint-Martin possède de nombreux points d’intérêt. Il est indispensable de louer une voiture pour les découvrir. Les ruines du Fort Louis, construit en 1789. Très belle vue sur la baie de Marigot et Anguilla. Le marché de Marigot, surtout actif le mercredi et le samedi matin. Le centre ville de Marigot. Le West Indies, un luxueux «mall» à la taille de Saint-Martin, sur le front de mer de Marigot. Pic Paradis. Sur la route de Grand-Case, ce morne Fans of nautical sports have a huge variety to choose from (see following pages) and a visit to the Réserve Naturelle is a must, on land or at sea (see pages 140 to 155). In addition to its beautiful beaches, Saint Martin has many other points of interest. But one must rent a car to discover them. In Marigot the ruins of Fort Louis, built in 1789, provide beautiful views of Marigot Bay and Anguilla. The open-air marketplace of Marigot, especially active on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The center of Marigot. The West Indies, a luxury “mall,” Saint Martin-size, right on the waterfront of Marigot. Pic Paradis. Front Street, la rue principale, regorge de boutiques en duty free. “Kerosene Beach”. Le spectacle des gros porteurs se posant à l’aéroport de Juliana est un grand moment. Attention au décollage à rester en dehors du souffle des réacteurs. Les casinos. Don’t leave anything valuable in your car! Grand-Case All of the activity takes place on the boulevard that runs along the ocean, lined with charming old Creole houses. Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Kitesurf A l’inverse de ce que l’on imagine parfois, Le kite surf est un sport où l’on se fait très vite plaisir et qui ne demande ni une forme olympique ni des biceps d’acier. D'ailleurs, les filles progressent souvent plus rapidement que les garçons, tout simplement parce qu’elles opposent moins de résistance à la traction de la voile. Les équipements modernes ont mis Theo Demanez, Cabrinha international team rider, champion international freestyle, strapless & foil l’accent sur la sécurité et l’idéal est bien sûr de prendre quelques cours pour maîtriser la technique. Les kite surfeurs de Saint-Martin se retrouvent sur la baie Nettlé et la baie de Cul-de-Sac (École française B52 Kite School) et sur la baie Orientale (École française de kite Vela Wind Adventures). Le kite surf est interdit sur la baie du Galion, par arrêté préfectoral. In contrast to what one might think, kite surfing is a sport that can be learned very quickly and does not require an Olympic physique or biceps made of steel. Proof of this is that girls often make faster progress than boys, simply because they offer less resistance to the traction of the sail. Modern equipment puts an accent on safety, and it is always best to take a few lessons to master the technique. Kite surfers in Saint Martin gather on Nettle Bay and Cul de Sac Bay (B52 Kite School), and at Orient Bay (Wind Adventures). Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Paddle Board Facile et accessible à tous, le standup paddle – on dit “SUP” et paddle board – est à la mode. Excellent pour les abdos et les fessiers, ce sport surpasse toutes les salles de sport, en douceur, sans s’ennuyer et en pleine nature. Depuis la plage de la Baie Orientale, avec le club Wind Adventures, vous pourrez découvrir la côte et Green Cay. Le club propose aussi de vous emmener en bateau jusqu’à Tintamare, pour un retour en paddle board dans le sens du vent et de la mer. Caribbean Paddling loue des SUP – et des kayaks – au départ de l’embarcadère de Pinel, et OC4 propose des excursions en SUP vers le Rocher Créole. Au Galion, avec Windy Reef, vous pourrez tenter le paddle-surf Stand-up paddle – “SUP” or paddle board – is easy and accessible to everyone. Excellent for those abs and buttocks, it outdoes any gym. It’s gentle exercise that you’ll enjoy without getting bored, plus you’re in the middle of nature. Starting on the beach in Orient Bay, Wind Adventures will take you on an exploration of the coast and Green Cay. The club also offers to take you by boat to Tintamare for a return on paddle board with the wind and the sea behind you. Caribbean Paddling rents stand-up paddleboards — and kayaks — from the embarcadero at Pinel, and OC4 offers SUP and kayak excursions to Creole Rock. At Galion beach, thanks to Windy Reef, you will be able to try surf paddling in the waves.

Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Windsurf Les conditions idéales sont réunies à Saint-Martin pour les sportifs les plus exigeants comme pour les débutants, à partir de sept ans. Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Jet Ski Le départ des excursions en jet ski a lieu en général d'Anse Marcel, de la Baie Orientale ou du lagon de Simpson Bay. On peut louer un jet-ski pour trente minutes ou une heure, afin de découvrir ce sport seul ou en couple, mais aussi partir en excursion à plusieurs, sous la houlette d’un moniteur expérimenté, qui connaît le parcours et garantit la sécurité. Pour les plus sportifs, des tours de l’île sont organisés par les sociétés de location de jets. Les jets de location sont le plus souvent des jets à selle, sur lesquels il est possible de s’asseoir, seul ou à deux. À noter: contrairement aux bateaux à moteur, les jet-skis n’ont pas le droit de circuler dans la Réserve Naturelle. Ils sont également interdits sur tout le territoire marin d’Anguilla. Jet ski excursions generally start out from Anse Marcel, Orient Bay or Simpson Bay lagoon. Jet skis can be rented for 30 minutes or an hour, for a sport that can be enjoyed alone, with a friend, or in a large group, with the guidance of an experienced instructor, whose expertise and knowledge of the island ensures your safety. For those who are more athletic, the rental companies can organize longer, around-the-island tours. The jet skis available for rent are most often those with a seat, for one or two people. Please remember: while boats are allowed, jet skis are prohibited from navigating in the Marine Park zones. They are also forbidden in all of the waters around Anguilla. 34

Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Plongée Diving Plus qu’un sport, la plongée est un monde à part. Un monde de calme, habité de créatures multicolores, où l’on évolue en trois dimensions, en apesanteur, et où chaque instant peut réserver une surprise. Idéale pour le citadin stressé, la plongée apprend la maîtrise de soi et l’appréciation de ses qualités personnelles. Visiter les îles sans découvrir leurs fonds sous-marins serait très dommage. Les clubs de plongée proposent tous des initiations pour les débutants et sauront guider le plongeur aguerri vers les sites les plus renommés. More than just a sport, scuba diving is an invitation to discover another world. You can float weightlessly through this world of tranquility, peopled by multi-colored creatures, where a surprise awaits you every minute. Perfect relaxation for the stressed-out city dweller, diving is a great way to get in touch with your inner self as well. To visit the island and not discover its underwater world would be a shame. Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Snorkeling Équipé d'un masque, d'un tuba et de palmes, il est possible de pratiquer la randonnée aquatique, mieux connue sous l’anglicisme snorkeling, depuis la plupart des plages de l'île. Pour observer la vie sous marine, déplacez-vous doucement. Les animaux intègreront votre présence, vaqueront à leurs occupations et vous les observerez mieux. À savoir : les palmes ne doivent pas sortir de l’eau. À Pinel, la Réserve naturelle a mis en place le seul sentier sous-marin de l'île, où l'équipe de professionnels certifiés vous équipera d'un masque-tuba recouvrant tout le visage et permettant une large vision et une respiration naturelle. Balisé, le sentier est équipé de panneaux sous-marins informatifs sur les différentes espèces présentes. Equipped with a mask, snorkel, and fins, you can enjoy aquatic explorations, starting from most of island’s beaches. To observe underwater life, swim slowly. The animals won’t take any notice of you, they’ll go about their business and you can observe them much better. Note: fins shouldn’t break the water’s surface. At Pinel, the Réserve Naturelle has established the only underwater pathway on the island, where a staff of certified professionals will fit you with a snorkeling mask and tube that covers the entire face, allowing for increased visibility and natural breathing. Well marked, the path is equipped with informative underwater signage about the various species present. 38

Saint-Martin Sint Maarten Saison cyclonique Hurricane season LA SAISON CYCLONIQUE, de juin à novembre, voit la migration de nombreux voiliers vers le Sud des Antilles, normalement plus épargné. Toutefois, depuis le passage très méridional de plusieurs phénomènes cycloniques ces dernières années, une option fréquente pour des centaines de propriétaires est de très bien caler leur bateau à terre dans l’un des chantiers de Saint-Martin et d’en profiter pour faire les travaux nécessaires. D’autres font confiance aux marinas, qui limitent le nombre de bateaux à quai, afin de pouvoir mettre en place des amarrages ultra sécurisés. DURING THE HURRICANE SEASON, June through November, quite a few sailboats migrate toward the far southern tip of the Caribbean. Yet due to the more southerly path that some of these storms have taken in recent years, a popular option for hundreds of owners is to secure their boats on land in one of the shipyards in Saint Martin, and use this time to get necessary work done. Others leave their boats in the safety of marinas, which limit the number of vessels at the dock in order to put ultra-secure moorings in place. Saint-Martin Baie de Marigot Bien protégé, sauf par houle de nord, c’est le mouillage obligé de tous les bateaux de passage, et le seul endroit du côté français de l’île où il est possible de faire les formalités d’immigration, obligatoires à l’arrivée comme au départ (voir page 40). Les plaisanciers ont le choix entre le mouillage et les pontons de la Marina Fort Louis (VHF 16 – Tél.: + 59 - 05 90 51 11 11). La Marina propose un quai sécurisé pour les dinghies, qui peuvent également être amarrés sur le quai du front de mer, entre la gare maritime et le marché. Le mouillage est payant (voir tarifs page 44). À deux pas du centre ville et de la station de taxis (+ 59 - 05 90 87 56 54), le site est idéal pour les approvisionnements et les pleins d’eau et de carburants (à la marina Fort Louis). Il faut cinq minutes en canot, par le chenal d’entrée du lagon, pour se rendre à la Marina Port la Royale, en plein cœur de la ville, ou dans les chantiers de Sandy Ground et leurs abords, où sont regroupés un grand nombre de professionnels du nautisme très qualifiés. Fort heureusement, Pinel redevient une île déserte à 16h30 chaque jour, après le départ de la dernière navette. L’îlot est inclus dans la Réserve naturelle: la circulation des jet-skis et la pêche y sont donc interdites. Les bateaux sont autorisés à mouiller une ancre, mais uniquement dans le sable. L’accès à Pinel par bateau est délicat et doit se faire en empruntant la passe entre Green Cay et Pinel. Au départ de la plage, le sentier sous-marin Pinel Snorkeling permet de découvrir une flore et une faune sous-marine protégées. À terre, un sentier botanique, équipé de carbets ombragés et de deux tables d’observation, invite à la promenade. Le village de Cul-de-Sac est facilement accessible après avoir laissé le dinghy au ponton et marché une dizaine de minutes. Une pharmacie et un supermarché, le long de la route principale, sont très bien achalandées. Saint-Martin Orient Bay Le débarquement en canot sur la plage de la Baie Orientale -internationalement connue sous le nom d’Orient Bay- peut être délicat. Il est possible d’accoster sur la plage du Club Orient, le spot le plus proche du mouillage de Green Cay, le plus facile pour débarquer et remonter son canot sur la plage. Les clients du Club Orient, tous naturistes, sont pour la plupart des habitués de cet hôtel créé en 1978 par un Néerlandais conquis par la beauté du site. Nombre d’entre eux ont l’habitude de faire leur marche matinale en tenue d’Adam -ou d’Eve- au lever du soleil pour se maintenir en forme. Saint-Martin Captain Oliver’s Marina Moorings et Sunsail ont choisi la marina idéalement protégée du Captain Oliver comme base de départ de leurs voiliers et leur présence assure une animation permanente du site, où les marins ont l’habitude de se rencontrer. Il est difficile de trouver la place de mouiller une ancre et l’on est le plus souvent obligé de prendre une place à quai. C’est également au départ de la marina que les ferries Voyager relient régulièrement et rapidement Saint-Martin à Saint-Barth. Au petit village, à quelques minutes de marche, il est possible de se ravitailler dans une épicerie moderne, assez bien achalandée. Des taxis sont disponibles en permanence à la marina. La particularité du site est qu’il se trouve en limite des frontières de l’île. Plutôt bien maîtrisé du côté français, l’urbanisme s’est déchaîné sur la partie hollandaise avec la construction de résidences et hôtels de plusieurs étages et même l’aménagement de la plage de Dawn Beach, côté Océan Atlantique, où l’hôtel Westin s’est installé. Sint Maarten Simpson Bay Lagoon Totalement protégé de la houle extérieure, le lagon de Simpson Bay représente un abri naturel parfait, dans lequel plusieurs marinas ont eu la bonne idée de s’installer (voir page 41). Du côté hollandais de l’île, l’accès au lagon se fait par le pont de Simpson Bay, dont le passage est payant (lire page 50). Une fois à l’intérieur du lagon, il est facile avec une annexe de se rendre dans le centre de Marigot et de s’amarrer dans la Marina Royale. De nombreux chantiers navals et entreprises nautiques sont installés en bordure du rivage. Il est possible d’y rester au mouillage – gratuit sur la partie française, mais payant sur la partie hollandaise, voir page 46 – mais il est impératif d’y naviguer à très petite vitesse, en raison de la profondeur variable et de la présence de plusieurs épaves non signalées. Anguilla Comment y aller How to get there Il est possible de se rendre à Anguilla par la mer en petit ferry, depuis la gare maritime de Marigot (sur le front de mer) et jusqu’au débarcadère de Blowing Point, où l’on peut louer une voiture, si l’on n’a pas fait de réservation avant le départ. Le service est fiable et la traversée ne dure qu’une vingtaine de minutes. L’enregistrement a lieu à la gare maritime, où l’on doit s’acquitter d’une taxe de 3 euros. On paye son ticket à bord : 20 dollars l’aller simple (enfants de 2 à 6 ans : 10 dollars). Même procédure au retour avec le paiement d’une taxe de 8 dollars à Anguilla. À l'arrivée, des taxis attendent les voyageurs, mais il est plus économique de louer une voiture. La conduite est à gauche et la circulation très fluide, sur des routes en bon état. Ne pas oublier son passeport ! Anguilla Road Bay Road Bay, en bordure de la plage de Sandy Ground, est un site incontournable pour les plaisanciers passant par Anguilla, puisqu’ils sont obligés d’y faire leurs formalités d’entrée et de sortie et d’y acquérir leur permis de croisière (cruising permit) s’ils souhaitent se rendre dans les autres mouillages de l’île (lire page précédente). La “marine base“, en bordure de la plage, regroupe les services de douane et d’immigration. Ce bureau est ouvert tous les jours, de 8h30 à midi et de 13h à 16h. Les skippers doivent présenter les papiers du bateau et les passeports de tous les passagers. Une taxe d'entrée de 5 US$ est appliquée à chaque personne à bord, plus une taxe de 3US$ pour les passagers seulement (pas l'équipage). La veille VHF se fait sur le canal 16, aux heures d’ouverture (Tél. : +1 (264) 497 5461). Indispensable à savoir: il est interdit aux bateaux de passer la nuit au mouillage à Anguilla ailleurs qu’à Road Bay ou à Crocus Bay. A terre, on trouve plusieurs restaurants, quelques bars et la jolie boutique Irie Life. Anguilla Little Bay & Crocus Bay Little bay Crocus bay À la pointe nord de Crocus Bay, Little Bay est un mouillage de charme. Protégée par son statut de Marine Park, la baie est équipée de corpsmorts et il est formellement interdit d’y mouiller l’ancre, comme d’y passer la nuit. Les falaises ocre tombant à pic dans la mer constituent un site de snorkeling et de découverte remarquable. Si les poissons abondent sous l’eau, les oiseaux marins, et surtout les pélicans, s’adonnent à des parties de pêche impressionnantes. Il est possible d’aller mouiller l’ancre pour la nuit juste à côté, à Crocus Bay, l’un des deux seuls mouillages où il est possible de passer la nuit à Anguilla, l’autre étant Road Bay. Il est préférable de mouiller l’ancre à bonne distance de la plage, dans la mesure où le vent a souvent tendance à tourner. Le grand bâtiment blanc sur la partie nord de la plage abrite le restaurant Da Vida, qui propose une cuisine novatrice et délicieuse, où l’Asie et la Caraïbe se rejoignent. Little Bay part of Marine Park. No anchoring or staying overnight. Anchoring in Crocus Bay. Very good restaurant. Dinghy dock in front of Da Vida’s At the north point of Crocus Bay, Little Bay is an anchorage with special characteristics. Protected by its status as a Marine Park, the bay is equipped with mooring buoys, and it is prohibited to anchor on the bottom, as it is to spend the night here. Ocher cliffs that drop straight into the water create a remarkably interesting snorkeling site. There are often entire schools of fish, which make it a good feeding ground for marine birds, and especially pelicans. It is possible to drop the anchor at Crocus Bay, one of the only two moorings in 100 Parc marin protégé à Little Bay. Interdiction d’ancrer et de rester la nuit. Mouillage à Crocus Bay. The large, white building on the north end of the beach is Da Vida, a restaurant which serves delicious, innovative cuisine in a fusion of Asia and the Caribbean.

Anguilla Sandy Island Aisément repérable de loin grâce à ses cocotiers, Sandy Island est un îlot privé où les visiteurs sont les bienvenus, pourvu qu’ils respectent le site. Une zone de mouillage a été délimitée par le Marine Park et équipée de corps morts. En l’absence de bouées, mouiller dans le sable. Il est préférable d’approcher de Sandy Island avec une bonne luminosité, en raison des nombreux massifs de coraux affleurant près de la surface. A terre, un sympathique bar restaurant propose des boissons à base de rhum et sert les langoustes et les poissons pêchés le jour même par les pêcheurs anguillais. Vous n’avez pas de bateau ? Des ferries sur le quai proche de Johnnos, sur la plage de Road Bay (Sandy Ground), vous emmèneront à Sandy Island. Parc marin protégé. Mouillage dans le sable. Délicieux déjeuner à terre. Marine Park. Anchoring in the sand. Delicious lunch ashore. Easily recognizable from a distance with its coconut grove, Sandy Island is a private island where visitors are welcome, as long as they respect the environment. A zone for anchoring was defined by the Marine Park and equipped with buoys. In case buoys are missing, anchor in the sand. It is better to approach Sandy Island in good daylight, as there are many coral outcroppings close to the surface. Ashore, a charming bar and restaurant serves rum drinks and prepares fresh lobsters and fish, caught the same day by the anguillian fishermen. No boat ? Take the sea shuttles from the pier next to Johnnos on Road Bay (Sandy Ground). 102

Anguilla Shoal Bay East La plage de Shoal Bay East – à ne pas confondre avec Shoal Bay West – est classée parmi les dix plus belles plages du monde. L’eau y est idéalement turquoise et le sable, très fin et très blanc, se déroule sur près de deux kilomètres. La baie est classée en Marine Park et donc totalement protégée. La pêche y est interdite, les fonds coralliens sont magnifiques et très facilement accessibles. Pour les bateaux à moteur, il existe un chenal d’accès au milieu des récifs, d’une profondeur de 1,80 mètre, exclusivement réservé aux habitués. Très belle plage. Chenal d’accès réservé aux habitués. Gorgeous beach. Channel reserved for those who know it. The beach at Shoal Bay East – which should not be confused with Shoal Bay West – ranks among the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. The water is pure turquoise and the powder white sand stretches for almost two kilometers. The bay is classed as a Marine Park and therefore is fully protected. It is forbidden to fish there, the coral reef is magnificent and easily accessible. For motorboats there is a 1,8 meter channel in the middle of the reef, reserved exclusively for those who know it. 104

Anguilla Prickly Pear Le lagon de Prickly Pear East colle si parfaitement à l’image du paradis terrestre qu’il peut parfois être un peu trop fréquenté par les catamarans de day charter, seuls autorisés à utiliser le mouillage. Les autres bateaux devront prendre l’une des bouées placées au sud de Prickly Pear East par le Marine Park, et utiliser leur canot pour contourner la pointe et entrer dans le lagon. La longue barrière de corail de Seal Island abrite des myriades de poissons multicolores, dans un courant souvent assez fort. Rappelons que Prickly Pear fait partie du Marine Park et qu’il est interdit d’y passer la nuit. Marine Park. Forbidden to stay overnight. Prickly Pear East lagoon is the perfect image of paradise on earth, yet there are days when there are too many day charter catamarans, only boats to be allowed to use this anchorage. Other boaters will use one of the moorings provided by the Marine Park, in the lee of PrickParc marin protégé. Interdiction d’y passer la nuit. ly Pear East, and enter the lagoon with their dinghy. Myriads of multi-colored fish can be found near the long coral reef of Seal Island, where the current can be quite strong. La plage de Scrub Island est sans doute l’une des plus belles d’Anguilla, et il est dommage que ce mouillage ne soit possible et confortable que par beau temps. Anguilla Dog Island Le site souvent rouleur de Great Bay est le seul mouillage possible autour de Dog Island, qui devient impraticable en cas de houle de Nord. Dans des conditions normales, l’accostage en dinghy est souvent difficile, voire dangereux, et l’on préfèrera alors s’équiper de palmes pour débarquer sur la magnifique plage. Déserte, Dog Island est une île privée, véritable paradis pour les oiseaux et les ornithologues. Les fous et les frégates s’y reproduisent et défendent leurs nids avec force cris si le visiteur s’en approche d’un peu trop près. Les cactus "têtes à l’Anglais" et les lys sauvages ajoutent au cachet de cet îlot peu fréquenté, mais qui vaut le détour. Les amateurs de snorkeling passeront un moment de bonheur au sud de West Cay. Rappelons que Dog Island fait partie du Marine Park d’Anguilla et qu’il est interdit d’y passer la nuit. Anchorage often uncomfortable. Marine Park. Forbidden to stay overnight. The waters of Great Bay are often rough, making mooring around Dog Island difficult especially when there are swells from the north. Even in normal conditions, reaching the beach by dinghy may be dangerous and it is advised to wear palms and a mask and swim to the fabulous beach instead. Uninhabited, Dog Island is private and offers a true paradise for birds and bird watchers. Mouillage souvent rouleur. Parc marin protégé. Interdiction d’y passer la nuit. Brown boobies and frigates reproduce here and defend their nests with loud cries if curious visitors get too close. The Turk's cap cactus (Melocactus intortus) and wild lilies add a bit of charm to this deserted island that is worth a detour. Those who enjoy snorkeling should head to the south of West Cay. Remember that Dog Island is a Marine Park, and it is forbidden to spend the night. 108

Anguilla Rendez Vous Bay Mouillage dans le sable. Belle plage. Il est officiellement interdit de mouiller l’ancre dans cette magnifique baie ourlée d’une longue plage de sable fin, mais il semble que la tolérance soit de mise. Il faut toutefois veiller à déposer l’ancre sur fond de sable blanc, assez près de la plage, et non dans l’herbier, afin de ne pas porter atteinte à la flore et à la faune, et tout particulièrement aux lambis, dont l’espèce est protégée. Rendezvous Bay est réputée pour son bar restaurant de plage, le Dune Preserve (vers le milieu de la plage), et l’un de ses propriétaires, le chanteur Bankie Banx, parfois appelé le "Bob Dylan anguillais". It is officially forbidden to anchor in this magnificent bay with its long, fine sand beach, but it appears as if some tolerance is allowed. Yet it is always important to anchor on the sandy bottom closer to the beach, and never in the underwater plant beds so as not to cause damage to the flora and fauna, and especially the conch—a protected species. Rendezvous Bay is known for its beach bar/restaurant, the Dune Preserve (approximately half way on the beach), and one of its owners, reggae singer Bankie Banx, sometimes referred to as the “Anguillan Bob Dylan.” Anchoring in the sand. Saint-Barthélemy Formalités Clearance Les formalités d’entrée et de sortie des bateaux se font obligatoirement et seulement au port de Gustavia. Quinze minutes avant d’entrer dans le chenal du port, les capitaines sont priés d’appeler la capitainerie du port sur le canal VHF 12, afin d’informer de leur arrivée. Les bureaux sont ouverts tous les jours, de 7h à 18h (tél. 05 90 27 66 97). Le personnel de la capitainerie se charge des formalités d’immigration. Se munir des papiers du bateau et des passeports de tous les passagers. Plusieurs zones de Saint-Barth, dont l’anse de Colombier et l’île Fourche, sont incluses dans la Réserve naturelle marine, dont le bureau se trouve sur le port de Gustavia (voir détails et réglementation pages 114 et 115). Clearing in and out must be done at the harbor of Gustavia, and only there. Forty-five minutes before arriving at the entry channel to the port, skippers are required to call the harbor office on VHF channel 12 to announce their arrival. The port offices are open from 7:00am to 6:pm daily (tel. 05 90 27 66 97). The harbor staff takes care of the Dinghy dock & capitainerie (harbor office) clearance. All captains must furnish the papers for the boat, as well as the passports for all persons aboard. Several areas of SaintBarts, like Ile Fourche and Anse de Colombier, are included in the Marine park (Marine natural preserve), whose office is on the harbor of Gustavia (see details and rules pages 114 and 115). 112

Saint-Barthélemy Gustavia Trois choix se présentent au plaisancier à l’arrivée à Gustavia : demander une place à quai, mouiller sur corps-mort à proximité du centre ville, ou ancrer à l’extérieur. Il est interdit de mouiller dans le chenal d’entrée. Une taxe de mouillage est applicable à tous les bateaux, selon leur longueur, et leur largeur pour les multicoques. L’accès aux douches et le ramassage des ordures sont inclus dans cette taxe (prière de trier le verre, l’aluminium et les déchets ménagers). À noter: tout mouvement du bateau dans le port, même un changement de mouillage, doit être signalé à la capitainerie. La vitesse est limitée à 3 nœuds. Un point d’eau permet de faire le plein sur le quai du Général de Gaulle, du lundi au samedi, de 7h30 à 17h30. Il est possible de faire le plein de diesel ou d’essence au quai du port de commerce, à Public, du lundi au vendredi de 8h à 14h30, le samedi de 7h30 à 11h30. Pas de vente d’eau potable sur ce quai. Il est hors de question de se rendre à Gustavia sans aller faire un tour dans ses rues pleines de charme. Ne pas oublier sa carte de crédit: la tentation est permanente. Saint-Barthélemy La Réserve Naturelle Fondée en 1996, la Réserve naturelle de Saint-Barthélemy se repartie en cinq zones autour de l’île. Cette protection a contribué à la conservation d’une belle population de tortues vertes dans les eaux de Saint-Barthélemy, et privilégie aussi la rencontre d’autres espèces menacées dans d’autres îles, tels les requins et les raies léopard. These protected areas have led to an increased population of green sea turtles in the waters around Saint Barthélemy, and ensure the survival of other species, such as sharks and leopard rays, that are threatened on other islands. Moorings are available for visiting boats. These moorings protect the coral reefs and underwater plant beds at diving sites, as well as in the bays of Colombier and Fourchue. In fact, these are the only two bays within the Réserve that allow any anchoring; elsewhere in the protected waters, this practice is prohibited. C’est un mouillage sympathique et très civilisé, rythmé par le ballet des petits avions décollant de l’aéroport. La plage, appréciée des touristes pour le calme de ses eaux, est dominée par le mythique hôtel Eden Rock. Les restaurants et les commerces de la baie de Saint-Jean sont tout proches de la plage, accessible avec l’annexe. Saint-Barthélemy Anse des Galets Shell beach L’Anse des Galets, qui abrite la plage de Shell Beach, est rapidement accessible depuis Gustavia. La plage, toute proche du centre de Gustavia, a perdu une bonne partie des petits coquillages qui la recouvraient et auxquels elle doit son nom. Attention : l’ancrage est strictement interdit dans la zone d’atterrissage du câble sous-marin de télécommunication au niveau de la plage de Shell Beach. Cette zone est délimitée par six bouées de signalisation. Shell Beach (Anse des Galets) is located a short walking distance from the center of Gustavia. It owes its name to the thousands of small shells that were deposited on the beach when the Port of Gustavia was dredged many years ago, but many of these shells were washed away in recent hurricanes. 118 Anchoring here is generally calm, and especially in good weather provides a nice spot to stop for lunch. Au départ de la marina Chesterfield's, à Philipsburg, le ferry Dawn II dessert le port de Saba trois fois par semaine, le mardi, le jeudi et le samedi. Départ de Philipsburg à 16h30. Départ de Saba le mardi, le jeudi et le samedi à 7h00. Durée de la traversée en ferry : 90 minutes environ. Le Ferry Edge, depuis Pelican Marina, à Simpson Bay, dessert Saba le mercredi, le vendredi et le dimanche. Départ de Saint-Martin à From Saint Martin, one can travel to Saba by boat or by plane. Tous accueillent les bateaux jusqu'à 50 tonnes. Un corps-mort à Ladder Bay est prévu pour les bateaux jusqu'à 100 tonnes. Les formalités d'entrée, assorties d'une redevance, se font au port : au bureau de l'immigration d'une part, et au Bureau du Marine Park d'autre part. On peut télécharger les deux formulaires à l'avance sur le site sabapark.org : cliquer sur Marine Park puis sur Yachting, aller au bas de la page. Si le bureau de l'immigration est fermé, se rendre au Harbour Office, ouvert de 6h à 18h 7/7. Le bureau du Marine Park est ouvert 7/7 de novembre à avril : 8h à 17h du lundi au vendredi, 10h à 16h le week-end. De mai à octobre, de 8h à 16h, du lundi au vendredi. Saba Plongée Diving Créé par le passé par les coulées de lave du volcan en éruption, le relief sous-marin de Saba est plein de surprises : tombants, pinacles, canyons, grottes... Une surprise attend le plongeur derrière chaque éponge. La trentaine de sites, quasiment tous situés sous le vent de l'île, se trouve à une vingtaine de minutes au maximum du port, d'où partent tous les bateaux. Le Marine Park a mis en place des bouées blanches de mouillage pour les clubs de plongée. La plongée en solo est interdite. Les amateurs de plongée en apnée apprécieront les sites moins profonds, où il pourront suivre presqu'à coup sûr les évolutions d'une ou plusieurs tortues au milieu des coraux et des gorgones. Saba Les sentiers Sulphur mine © Saba Tourism Development Foundation Entretenus par la "Saba Conservation Foundation", une douzaine de sentiers bien balisés attendent les randonneurs. Le plus réputé – "Mount Scenery Stairway" – prend son départ à l'entrée du village de Windwardside. Tout près de là, la "Trail Shop" dispose de toutes les informations sur le réseau de sentiers. L'excursion d'une heure et demie à deux heures, dans une végétation dense et à l'ombre du feuillage, amène le randonneur au sommet de ce volcan, dont la dernière éruption remonte aux environs de 1640. Tout en haut, fougères arborescentes, orchidées et acajous font partie de cette forêt tropicale humide, dans une fraîche atmosphère. "The Ladder", une autre excursion, consiste à descendre – puis à remonter ! – les 400 marches par lesquelles étaient transportées à dos d'âne ou d'homme les marchandises qui arrivaient par bateau, avant la construction de la route actuelle, terminée en 1958. Hiking trails Mount Scenery Maintained by the Saba Conservation Foundation, a dozen well-marked trails await those who like to hike. The most popular – Mount Scenery Stairway – starts at the entry to the village of Windwardside. Nearby, the Trail Shop has extensive information and maps for the island's network of trails. Through dense vegetation whose leaves provide shade, a 90-minute to 2 hours excursion leads hikers to the summit of Mount Scenery, a volcano whose last eruption dates back as far as 1640. At the top, large ferns, orchids and mahogany trees are part of a rainforest, with cool, refreshing air. The Ladder, a different excursion, takes you down and then back up the 400 steps by which merchandise arriving by boat was carried by mule or manpower in the days before the road was completed in 1958. Bienvenue à St Eustache Un peu d’histoire A bit of history Saint-Eustache – ou Statia (prononcer sté-cha) – a été la première puissance étrangère à officiellement reconnaître les États-Unis d'Amérique lorsque le 16 novembre 1776 le gouverneur néerlandais de l'île salua de treize coups de canon l'arrivée du USS Andrew Doria, venu s'approvisionner en armes et en munitions, alors que ce navire était recherché par les Britanniques. Une plaque offerte en 1939 par le président F.D. Roosevelt commémore cet événement dans l'enceinte du Fort Oranje. Sint Eustatius – or Statia (pronounce staysha) – was the first foreign nation to officially recognize the United States of America. On November 16th, 1776, when the American ship “Andrew Doria” sailed in to stock up on arms and ammunition, the island’s Dutch governor fired the 11-gun salute, even although the ship was wanted by the British. A plaque, offered by President F.D. Statia Sentiers de randonnée Hiking trails Au Sud de l'île se trouve un volcan relativement jeune et parfaitement formé : "The Quill". Classé en Parc national, il est géré par la Fondation des parcs nationaux de St-Eustache (STENAPA) et s'élève à une hauteur de 600 mètres. Le cratère abrite une forêt semi-tropicale et rend l'excursion particulièrement intéressante. Une fois arrivé au bord du cratère, descendez explorer la luxuriante végétation qui le tapisse. À l'intérieur, vous pourrez admirer les gigantesques cotonniers et les arbres fruitiers, qui forment une belle canopée, et découvrir au moins 17 sortes d'orchidées. Vous croiserez peut-être des iguanes, At the South end area of the island, lies a quite young, perfectly formed volcano: "The Quill". As a National Park, it is managed by St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) and soars dramatically to a height of 2000 feet. The crater contains semi-tropical rainforest; an intriguing hiking expedition. After you have made the ascent to the crater rim, explore the verdant lush tropical rainforest, nestled within its enormous crater. Inside the crater you can enjoy gazing up at the gigantic silk cotton and fruit trees that tower the canopy. There are at least 17 different kinds of orchids. Statia Diving La qualité de la plongée sous-marine surpasse toutes les autres destinations de la Caraïbe, dans un parc marin protégé depuis 15 ans. Des murs et des pinacles couverts de coraux et d'éponges composent de spectaculaires décors naturels. Ces sites sont fréquentés par le requin gris, la raie léopard, la tortue imbriquée, la tortue verte et le requin nourrice. Les récifs peu profonds, entre 12 et 23 mètres, ont été sculptés dans des piliers volcaniques, couverts de coraux durs et mous. Les poissons sont abondants et l'on trouve certaines espèces rares, comme le rouget volant, que l'on peut Plongée voir tous les jours à Saint-Eustache. Un site de plongée renommé, situé entre 18 et 21 mètres, est composé d'épaves enchevêtrées, dont le poseur de câbles Charles Brown, de 100 mètres de long. De temps en temps, un plongeur découvre une bouteille ancienne intacte, une ancre couchée sur la sable ou même l'une de ces perles bleues que l'on donnait autrefois en salaire aux esclaves. Une bouée de mouillage est installée sur tous les sites de plongée et un seul bateau est autorisée par site : l'assurance d'une plongée privilégiée, avec un nombre limité de plongeurs sous l'eau. The quality of deep-sea diving in Statia’s protected Marine Park, already in existence for 15 years, exceeds any other Caribbean destination. The coral and sponge covered walls and pinnacles provide breathtaking scenery. These sites are frequented by grey reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, hawksbill turtles, green turtles and nurse sharks. The shallower reefs of 40 to 75 feet have been carved from volcanic fingers that are covered with a variety of soft and hard corals. The fish life is abundant with a few rarer species like the flying gurnards, that are seen daily in Statia. One of the many dive sites in Statia consists of tangled shipwrecks located in 60 feet to 70 feet of water, such as the Charles Brown, 328 feet long, one of the longest wrecks in the Caribbean. Occasionally a diver will discover an antique bottle perfectly intact, the vision of an anchor lying on the sand or even one of the blue beads that were once given to the slaves as their salary. Elle veille à ce que les sites terrestres et marins dont elle a la gestion restent intacts, naturels et productifs, tout en accueillant de nombreux visiteurs et de nombreuses activités aquatiques, pédestres et équestres. Néanmoins, les sites naturels de Saint-Martin sont fragiles, et comme partout ailleurs ils subissent les impacts du réchauffement climatique et des pollutions diverses. Prendre conscience de la qualité de cet environnement, mais aussi de sa fragilité, permet d’apprécier avec un regard différent et un comportement respectueux les sites de la Réserve naturelle de Saint-Martin. Over the past 15 years, the Réserve naturelle has done a great job in accomplishing a range of conservation projects and putting an accent on environmental protection. It ensures that the sites on land and at sea that fall under its jurisdiction remain intact, natural, and productive, even while hosting many visitors and numerous aquatic, hiking, and equestrian activities. However, the natural sites in Saint Martin are fragile, and as in the rest of the world, suffer from the impact of climate change and various kinds of pollution. Being aware of the quality of the island’s environment, as well as its fragility, allows us to appreciate the sites within the Réserve naturelle de Saint-Martin in a different light and with more respectful behavior. Réserve Naturelle Créée en 1998, la Réserve naturelle nationale de Saint-Martin s’étend sur 3 060 hectares, au nord-est de la partie française. La partie marine de la Réserve, d’une superficie de 2 900 hectares, est située sur le plateau qui s’étend entre les îles d’Anguilla, de Saint-Martin et de Saint-Barthélemy. 154 hectares de parcelles terrestres, soit 11 kilomètres de linéaire côtier, ont été affectés par l’État au Conservatoire du Littoral et sont aujourd’hui gérés par la Réserve, ainsi que 198 hectares de zones humides, répartis sur toute l’île. Riche de grands écosystèmes que sont les mangroves, les herbiers de phanérogames marines, les récifs coralliens, les forêts littorales et les étangs, la Réserve naturelle de Saint-Martin abrite une faune et une flore marines et terrestres diversifiées, parmi lesquelles plusieurs espèces protégées. The marine zone of the Réserve, which comprises 2,900 hectares (7,000 acres), is situated on a plateau that extends between the islands of Anguilla, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy. Of this total acreage, 154 hectares (380 acres) are on the shore, including 11 linear kilometers of coastline placed under the aegis of the Conservatoire du Littoral by the French government, and currently managed by the Réserve, which also controls 198 hectares (489 acres) of wetlands found in various locations on the island. In excess of these limits, use of the buoys is the responsibility of the captain. The Réserve points out that mooring at night without authorization is forbidden and the captain is held responsible if the rule is not respected.

Réserve Naturelle Découverte Discovery La plage déserte de Petites Cayes, sur le sentier des Froussards The deserted beach of Petites Cayes, on the Froussards path. Four discovery paths invite hikers to walk along the main ecosystems making up the Réserve Naturelle. The Dry Forest In two and a half hours, one can walk the 4.5-kilometer Froussards path, between Anse Marcel and the beach at Grandes Cayes, via the deserted beach of Petites Cayes and discover the last intact dry forest on the island. Coastal Vegetation On the island of Pinel, a path connects the three beaches of this islet. Information panels and two orientation tables tell hikers about the outlying islands, local species of vegetation and the birds that inhabit these shores. The Mangroves Along the Etang de la Barrière, in Cul-de-Sac, a wooden path on stilts allows the discovery of a fascinating ecosystem between the land and the sea, dominated by mangroves, a popular spot for numerous species of birds. Underwater World On the island of Pinel, an underwater path equipped with informational panels allows to discover the protected underwater flora and fauna, with the help of a special mask provided by a professional guide. La végétation littorale Sur l’îlet Pinel, un sentier relie les trois plages de l’îlot. Des panneaux et deux tables d’orientation indiquent les îlets alentour, avec un descriptif des espèces végétales et des oiseaux habitués des lieux. La mangrove Dans la mangrove de l’étang de la Barrière, à Culde-Sac, un sentier en bois sur pilotis permet de découvrir entre terre et mer un écosystème fascinant, dominé par les palétuviers et terrain de prédilection de plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux. Les fonds marins Sur l’îlet Pinel, un sentier sous-marin jalonné de panneaux informatifs permet de découvrir une flore et une faune sous-marine protégées, à l’aide d’un masque intégral fourni par l’opérateur. 149

Réserve Naturelle Les étangs The Salt Ponds Situés entre terre et mer, les étangs et leurs mangroves abritent 85 espèces d’oiseaux, dont 55 espèces protégées. Les étangs atténuent les inondations en cas de fortes pluies, protègent la côte contre les agressions de la mer, décantent les alluvions et épurent les eaux avant leur rejet en mer. Officiellement très bien protégés – ils sont bénéficiaires d’un arrêté de protection de biotope pour l’enjeu avifaune, affectés au Conservatoire du littoral, gérés par la Réserve naturelle et même inscrits depuis 2012 à la convention de Ramsar – les 14 étangs protégés sont soumis à bien des pressions et bien des menaces : dépôts de remblais, déversements de déchets, rejets d’effluents d’assainissement non traités, défrichements sauvages de mangrove… Oiseaux marins migrateurs sur le Grand Étang Migrating marine birds around Great Pond Located at the intersection of the sea and the land, the salt ponds and their mangroves shelter 85 species of birds, of which 55 are protected. The ponds attenuate flooding after heavy rains, protect the shoreline, settle sediment and purify the water before it returns to the sea. Officially very well protected —they are the beneficiaries of a biotope protection order, assigned to the Conservatoire du littoral, managed by the Réserve Naturelle, and since 2012 even listed under the Ramsar Convention. But yet the 14 protected salt ponds are under an enormous amount of pressure and threats : depositing of debris, untreated water from septic systems, unauthorized cutting of the mangroves... 150 © Julien Chalifour

Réserve Naturelle Les oiseaux The Birds Canard des Bahamas - White-cheeked pintail Il est possible d'observer certaines des 85 espèces d'oiseaux répertoriées à Saint-Martin - parmi lesquelles la grande aigrette, l’aigrette neigeuse, le grand paille-en-queue, la sterne bridée, le puffin de l’Herminier, la petite sterne et bien sûr le pélican…- tout particulièrement aux abords des étangs. Quatre observatoires permettent de découvrir les oiseaux : • Étang du cimetière à Grand-Case (le long de la RN) • Étang de la Barrière à Cul-de-Sac (près du parking pour Pinel) • Étang de Chevrise à Mont Vernon (derrière la plage d’Orient Bay) • Mare Lucas à Oyster Pond (le long de la route) Important : à Tintamare, il est interdit aux bateaux de mouiller dans la baie de North Cove et à leurs occupants de descendre à terre afin de protéger le noddi brun, qui peut détruire son nid s’il est dérangé. Pelican It is possible to observe several of the 85 species of birds found in Saint Martin —including the great egret, the snowy egret, the red-tailed tropicbird, the bridled tern, the Herminier puffin, the little tern, and of course the pelican — and they can be seen primarily near the island's salt ponds. Réserve Naturelle Tortues marines Marine turtles Tortue verte à Tintamare Green Turtle at Tintamare La Réserve assure un suivi des pontes des tortues marines – tortues vertes, imbriquées et luth – avec l'aide d'une soixantaine d'écovolontaires, chargés de relever les traces laissées par les tortues dans le sable lorsqu'elles viennent pondre leurs oeufs sur les plages. Toute source de dérangement survenant lors de la saison de ponte (mars à octobre) peut pousser ces reptiles protégés à faire demi-tour, menaçant par la même occasion la survie de ces espèces fragiles. En mer, les tortues vertes ou imbriquées peuvent être observées toute l’année en plongée, le plus souvent sur des fonds rocheux de 3 à 15 mètres. Elles sont très présentes à Tintamare, où les baigneurs resteront à au moins 10 mètres de l'animal. Il est interdit de les toucher et de les poursuivre. La Réserve ensures the study of marine turtle egg laying habits – leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtles – with the help of 60 eco-volunteers who make note of the tracks left in the sand by the turtles when they come onto the beach to lay their eggs. Any sort of disturbance during the egg-laying season (March-October) can cause these protected turtles to make a U-turn, making these fragile species even more endangered than before. Divers can observe green turtles and hawksbill turtles all year, most frequently on rocky bottoms from 10 to 50 feet deep. Les herbiers sont la nurserie de nombreuses espèces, auxquelles ils offrent abri et nourriture. Ces plantes, écosystème fragile et menacé, jouent un rôle déterminant dans l'épuration des eaux littorales. Les récifs coraliens protègent la côte de la houle et servent d’habitat, de nourriture, de terrain de chasse, de refuge et de nurserie à des milliers d’espèces. The Réserve does a scientific study of the ocean’s depths since 2007. Underwater plant beds provide a nursery for numerous species and offer them protection and food. These plants represent a fragile, endangered ecosystem, that plays a determining role in the purification of coastal waters. The coral reefs protect the coast from swells. The coral also serves as a habitat for thousands of species—for food, hunting grounds, refuge and nurseries. Boat anchors pull up underwater plants and damage the coral, while chains destroy them all along the length of the links, and it takes decades for some of these species to recover and regenerate. Réserve Naturelle Naviguer et plonger Navigation and diving La découverte des milieux et des sites classés de la Réserve naturelle de Saint-Martin est permise. Des excursions en voiliers à destination, entre autres, de Tintamare sont organisées tout au long de l’année par des opérateurs partenaires de la Réserve naturelle. Les clubs de plongée de l’île ont tous signé une charte de partenariat avec la Réserve naturelle, qui les autorise à plonger sur les sites qu’elle gère et en particulier au Rocher Créole. L’objectif de ce partenariat, qui définit les obligations des plongeurs et leur engagement, consiste en une protection optimale des sites de plongée. À Pinel, les amateurs de plongée en apnée apprécieront le sentier sous-marin, au long duquel ils découvriront une flore et une faune sous-marine protégées. Tour operators who partner with the Réserve Naturelle organize sailboat excursions to Tintamare, among others, throughout the year. Réserve Naturelle Le poisson lion Lion Fish Originaire de l’Océan Pacifique et de l’Océan Indien, le poisson lion (Pterois volitans) est une espèce invasive, introduite accidentellement dans la mer des Caraïbes. Très vorace et sans prédateur local, il constitue une menace pour nos récifs et nos poissons. Que faire à la vue de ce poisson Ne le manipulez et ne l’effrayez pas. Sa piqûre est douloureuse et peut provoquer un état de choc nécessitant une assistance médicale. Localisez le site. Si le poisson se trouve dans les eaux de la Réserve, merci d’informer la Réserve au 05 90 29 09 72. Dans la Réserve, seuls les gardes sont autorisés à chasser le poisson-lion. En dehors de la Réserve, les poissons peuvent être tués et coupés en deux, afin qu’ils nourrissent d’autres espèces et que d’éventuels prédateurs prennent goût à cette nouvelle chair et commencent ainsi à le chasser. I take part in La préservation de l'environnement et le développement d'activités économiques ne sont pas incompatibles. 72 sociétés – clubs de plongée, loueurs de bateaux, organisateurs d'excursion en mer et sociétés proposant des activités sur la partie marine de la Réserve naturelle – sont officiellement partenaires de la Réserve. Les partenaires s'engagent à respecter l'environnement, la réglementation et à diffuser des informations sur le patrimoine naturel de Saint-Martin. Toute société partenaire doit s’acquitter d’une redevance de 2 euros par usager et par jour pour participer à la protection des sites. Ces fonds sont utilisés à l’aménagement des sites, comme la pose et l’entretien des mouillages mis à la disposition des usagers. Chaque année, plus de 40 000 personnes visitent la Réserve grâce à l’une de ces sociétés partenaires. Environmental protection and the development of commercial activities are not incompatible. These partners are committed to respecting the environment, defending environmental regulations, and diffusing information about the natural heritage sites of Saint Martin. These funds are used for improvement of the sites, such as the installation and maintenance of the moorings made available for boats. Agoa Une aire marine protégée dédiée à la protection des mammifères marins «Agoa» est une zone spécialement protégée de la convention de Carthagène, au statut international. Elle est gérée par l’Agence des aires marines protégées, établissement public dédié à la protection de la biodiversité marine. Sa superficie de 143 256 km2 correspond à la totalité de la superficie de la zone économique exclusive des Antilles françaises. Le sanctuaire Agoa a pour objectif de garantir un bon état de conservation des mammifères marins en les protégeant, ainsi que leurs habitats, des impacts négatifs directs ou indirects, avérés ou potentiels, des activités humaines. It is managed by the French Marine Protected Areas Agency (Agence des aires marines protégées), a public organization dedicated to marine biodiversity conservation. Its 55 311 sq. mi. correspond 158 to the entire surface area of the French West Indies Exclusive economic zone. The Agoa protected marine area aims to ensure good marine mammal conservation by protecting both the mammals and their habitats from the direct or indirect, potential or proven, adverse impacts of human activities.

Nous en savons un peu plus à proximité des côtes. Mais ces zones sont aussi le domaine des usages maritimes. Pêche, plaisance, trafic maritime sont sources de pression et de menaces potentielles pour les mammifères marins. Pour maîtriser ou réduire toutes ces pressions, Agoa développe des actions de sensibilisation et fédère les initiatives de protection des acteurs de la mer. Son conseil de gestion peut proposer des mesures réglementaires. We do have a little more knowledge about parts nearer to the coast. But these zones are also used for maritime practices, i.e. fishing, boating and shipping, and sources of pressure and potential threats for the marine mammals. To manage or reduce all these sources of pressure, Agoa develops awareness actions and federates sea stakeholder initiatives. Its management board may also suggest regulatory measures. 159
